Welcome    Le West Island

You'll feel happy you came to Montréal's West Island at this stage of your youngster's life. Pre-schoolers know how to enjoy doing everything for the first time. They can meet friends in safe neighbourhood park, visit the animals at MacDonald experimental farm and the EcoMuseum, and encounter the natural wonders of the Morgan Arboretum. They may also want to listen to stories at the library, pull maple taffy off the snow during sugaring-off time, help pick apples, go for sleigh rides, learn to ice skate or splash in the city and neighbourhood pools. Parents can share these experiences and the joy that it brings to their children.

tip There are several "Moms & Tots" groups on the West Island where mothers and very young children (9 months to 5 years) meet.

Contact the WI Community Resource Centre for the group closest to you, 694-6404.

large bullet NURSERY SCHOOL

You can join a private or parent co-op nursery school. Parents run the co-ops and take turns participating in programs run by qualified early childhood educators - a good way to meet other parents and get to know the friends your child may well make for life.

Parents pay for nursery schools and programs.

tip Consult the yellow pages under Schools-Academic-Nursery & Kindergarten for private WI nursery schools and Montessori schools. For a listing of all co-op nursery schools call:

tip If you are in need of an adult babysitter to take care of your young children during the day or watch your older children before and after school, check in the local newspapers under “Babysitters Available” or place an ad under “Babysitters Wanted” in the newspaper or the supermarkets’ billboard. Schools may have a list of available mothers who will babysit in their home. Day Care centres and nurseries (in the Yellow Pages), and schools might also help you with their services. During school breaks and vacations, Recreation Departments organize summer camps. Call them or check under Summer and Winter Fun of this material.

large bullet BABY SITTERS

Some local schools and City Halls offer the Red Cross babysitting course for students. Qualified teenagers can then babysit your young children. Neighbours usually prove to be the best way to find teenage sitters.

You can also try the school guidance departments or various religious groups which run programs for teenagers for a list of adolescents available to babysit. Check under Employment in Adolescents section. A list of qualified baby sitters (16 and over) is also available from the WI Community Resource Centre. 694-6404

large bullet RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Besides pre-schoolers' story time, some libraries also offer music and art programs, puppet shows and toy lending libraries. See libraries listed under the Music, Art, Culture section of this Guide.

Each city runs programs for mothers and tots, including arts and crafts, gym and pool time, indoor and outdoor skating in winter. Call your Recreation Department.
