various services are offered to adolescents aged 12-17 years, to prepare

WEST ISLAND YMCA
supervises two Drop-in centres (one located in Kirkland and the other
one in Pointe-Claire), as well as programs at the Family Centre and
the Community Centre in neighbouring Pointe-Claire.www.westislandymca.qc.ca
DA SPOT YOUTH CENTRE: This Drop-in Centre provides
youth with a place of their own where they can meet friends and play
pool, ping-pong, basketball, video games, etc. Exact hours are available
through the Kirkland Recreation department or from Da Spot.

YOUTH DROP-IN CENTRE: Youth can play pool, ping-pong, video
games, at this Drop-in Centre. It is open weekdays from 2:30-5:30

The YMCA FAMILY CENTRE features athletic facilities
(gymnasium, pool, running track, squash courts, fitness centre, etc.).

The YMCA COMMUNITY CENTRE offers social and
support programs designed to help teenagers develop skills necessary
to cope in a positive manner with their personal life.
DIVERSION CLUBS: Adolescents between 12 and
17 experiencing difficulty in some area of their life can join these
clubs . Various activities and group discussions are organized by
youth workers.
INTERSECTIONS: Teens 15 to 18 years of age
who have left high school and are undecided or unprepared for the
future will benefit from this program. One-on-one support, workshops
and group activities help them to re-enter the work force or return
to an academic setting.

Centre for residents of Dorval offers pool, shuffleboard, pinball,
air hockey, video games and music.

BEACONSFIELD TEEN PROGRAM: This program is
designed for youth aged 13 to 17 years. It is held on Friday nights
from 7-11 p.m. It is a place to see new sights and experience new
activities. It features a wide variety of activities including arts,
movies, skiing, skating, camping, city excursions, casino nights,
etc. A games room includes ping-pong, soccer table, pool table, and
music. It is open on a drop-in basis. The program is held on a daily
basis during July and August and includes weekly excursions and a
3 day camping trip.

COUNSELLlNG
For the well being of youth, several social services are available
for adolescents and their families.
AMCAL - YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES: This community-based
service is dedicated to improve relationships between local teens
(aged 12 to17) and their families. It operates an emergency telephone
line and provides counselling and referral information, as well as
short term residential care. AMCAL also takes an active role in advocating
for the rights and special needs of young people.

THE BIG BROTHERS & BIG SISTERS OF WEST ISLAND:
Little Sisters and Little Brothers are children from single-parent
families who just want an adult friend. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters
are caring, available adults, from any walk of life, who are willing
to share a few hours a week with a child. They go for a walk, take
in a movie or a ball game, bake cookies or just sit and talk. In short,
they do whatever they both enjoy.

CADETS
AIR CADETS: For young persons aged 12 to 18,
who are interested in familiarization flights in gliders and air-planes;
learning about flying, navigation, meteorology, radio and bush survival;
playing in marching bands; going to summer camps and even learning
to fly a glider or airplane.

SEA CADETS: For any young person interested
in the traditions and science of the sea. They will learn about navigation,
seamanship and other skills. Every year, there are a number of openings
available to Sea Cadets to serve aboard Canadian Naval and Coast Guard
ships. Exchange cadets have also served aboard various NATO ships.
Summer camps are held each year at various locations across Canada
with a program of outdoor sports, sailing, power boating and instruction
in other boating subjects.

ARMY CADETS: Any boy or girl between 12 and
18 years can join the Army Cadets. Their activities include drill,
recreational shooting, sports, 4-6 excursions a year and one week
of camping. They meet every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from September
to June. There are no entrance fee.

ARTS AND MUSIC

WEST ISLAND YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA:The members
of these three orchestras meet every Sunday afternoon. The young musicians
are interested in brass, wind, string or percussion instruments. Concerts
and an intensive weekend exchange with other orchestras are organized
during the year.

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES: Social workers, nurses
and art therapists of the 3 CLSCs work in co-operation with the individual,
the family and the school to support the student regarding his/her
own health and wellbeing. The following services are available:
- Health and sexuality education
- Medical and gynecologic examinations
- Vision and hearing screening
- Consultation with school personnel
- Psychosocial assessment
- Individual, family and group counselling
- Referrals to community services.
YOUTH CLINIC: Free and confidential services
are available at each CLSC and at John Abbott College, for young people

concerns and find the best solution. The services focus on:
