With Montreal only 30 minutes down the road, West Island
cultural life rivals that of
major North American cities.
|
CULTURE |
You'll find jazz in downtown clubs. Opera, dance and theatre companies visit
from around the world. The museums organize international exhibitions that
often stop here before going on to New York or Toronto. Montréal's
Symphony Orchestra and chamber groups give subscriptions and gala concerts.
There are more visiting and permanent art exhibits in museums, universities,
private galleries, libraries and cultural centres than you could count.
In fact, you don't even need to leave the West Island to enjoy a full range
of cultural events put on by professional and semi-professional musicians,
artists, sculptors and actors in the area.
To locate a specific cultural group, start with the cultural
centres and libraries listed below. You'll soon locate groups of people
who use the centres' facilities but are not listed in any directories. Many
musicians who play in jazz, chamber groups or the Montréal Symphony
Orchestra live on the West Island and participate in musical events.
Directors at the many private galleries and cultural centres
will advise you on craft and art courses. Many renowned Canadian artists
studied under the qualified professionals who teach in the West Island.
Pick up copies of newsletters listing future exhibitions and events.
